The City of White Plains

The City of White Plains is the county seat in Westchester County. There are approximately 60,000 residents in White Plains. There are three major Courthouses in White Plains, including the U.S. Courthouse for the Southern District of New York, renamed the Charles L. Brieant United States Courthouse in 2008 after the death of Judge Brieant, who was a federal judge for almost forty years. Adjacent to the federal courthouse is the Westchester County Courthouse on Martin Luther King Jr., Blvd. Additionally, there is the White Plains City Court, located on South Lexington Avenue in White Plains.

To the north of White Plains is the town of North Castle. To the north and east of White Plains is the Town and Village of Harrison, and to south is the Town of Scarsdale. To the west of White Plains is the Town of Greenburgh. The City of White Plains became the County Seat in 1758, when the County of Westchester separated from Bronx County. At that time, Westchester was in the Northern section of the Bronx. The unincorporated village of White Plains was a section of the Town of Rye until 1788, and remained part of the Town of Rye until 1788, when the Town of White Plains was established.

From Westchester & Rockland Counties (West of the Hudson River):

Travel eastbound on the New York State Thruway (I-87) across the Tappan Zee Exit 8, take the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) east to Exit 6; make a right turn at North Broadway (Route 22) to Martine Avenue; turn right on Martine Avenue, and travel 4 blocks. The City Courthouse is on the corner of Martine and South Lexington Avenue, just past the White Plains Public Library on the left.

From the East (Connecticut and the New England States):

(A) Take the Merritt Parkway (Ct.) to the Hutchinson River Parkway (NY) to the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) West to White Plains; continue on I-287 to Exit 6; make a left onto North Broadway (Route 22) to Martine Avenue; turn right on Martine Avenue and proceed 4 blocks to South Lexington Avenue, the City Courthouse is on the corner of Martine & South Lexington Avenue.

(B) Go South on (I-95) to the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287), Westbound to Exit 6; turn left on North Broadway (Route 22) to Martine Avenue; turn right on Martine Avenue and proceed 4 blocks to the White Plains City Court on the left.

From the South (NYC, Long Island & New Jersey):

(A) Take the George Washington Bridge to the Henry Hudson Parkway (north/upstate); continue North to the Saw Mill River Parkway northbound to the New York State Thruway (I-87) to Exit 8; take the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) east to Exit 6; right on North Broadway (Route 22) to Martine Avenue; make a right on Martine Avenue and proceed 4 blocks. The City Courthouse is on the corner of Martine & South Lexington Avenue.

(B) Take the Bronx River Parkway to Exit 21 “White Plains – Main Street”; turn right on Main Street and travel 4 blocks to Court Street; make a right turn on Court Street; go one block and make a right on Martine Avenue. The City Courthouse on the corner of Martine & South Lexington Avenue, just past the White Plains Public Library on the left.

(C) Take the Bronx River Parkway to the Sprain Parkway; continue North to the Exit for I-287; go east to White Plains; continue on I-287 to Exit 6; make a right turn on North Broadway (Route 22) to Martine Avenue; turn right on Martine Avenue and proceed 4 blocks to the City Courthouse.

(D) Hutchinson River Parkway to either alterative (1) or (2)

Alternate 1:

Exit 23 (Mamaroneck Avenue), White Plains; make a right turn on Mamaroneck Avenue and continue North approximately 4 miles (into the center of White Plains) to Martine Avenue; turn left on Martine Avenue and proceed three blocks to the City Courthouse.

Alternate 2:

Exit 27 on the Hutchinson Parkway to the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) west to White Plains; travel on I-287 to Exit 6; make a left onto North Broadway (Route 22); turn right on Martine Avenue and proceed 4 blocks to the White Plains City Court.

Bronx Whitestone Bridge to the Hutchinson River Parkway; north to either alternative (1) or (2) above.

Parking For the White Plains City Court, Westchester County Court and U.S. District Court in White Plains

There is parking at the Galleria Mall, which can be accessed from either Martine Avenue across from the White Plains Public Library, or on Main Street on either side of Martin Luther King Jr., Blvd. There is also parking beneath the White Plains Public Library; see directions above.
