The City of Mount Vernon is situated on the northern border of Bronx County. The In the 2010 U.S. Census, there were approximately 68,000 residents of the city. Mount Vernon has the 8th largest population of any New York city. Mount Vernon was named after the Virginia plantation where our first president George Washington lived after his presidency.

The Mount Vernon City Court, along with White Plains, New Rochelle, Yonkers and Peekskill, has the largest of the local courts in Westchester County. The Mount Vernon City Court has jurisdiction over criminal cases, traffic infractions, civil cases, landlord-tenant matters, and small claims cases. Traffic infractions in the Mount Vernon City Court are issued by the New York State Police, the Westchester County Police, and the local City of Mount Vernon Police.

There are a number of major highways which go through Mount Vernon, including the Bronx River Parkway, the Hutchinson Rover Parkway, The Cross County Parkway, and local roadways such as Gramatan Avenue and Lincoln Avenue among others.

Village, Town Court and City Court justices are reluctant to permit a plea bargain of a speeding ticket to another moving violation or to a non-moving violation if the charge is for more than 25 miles per hour over the speed limit. Additionally, the Mount Vernon City Court judges are tough on speeding in construction zones or school zones. However, we have successful in obtaining favorable sentences even with these violations, particularly if the driver has an otherwise “clean” driving record and has no other tickets within an eighteen month period.

If you receive and are convicted of two speeding tickets in an eighteen month period for travelling 21-30 miles an hour over the posted speed limit, this can quickly result in a suspension of your driver’s license, as you would have 12 points on your driver’s license. 11 points assessed against the driver’s license within an eighteen month period results in a suspension of the driver’s license, or suspension of privileges to operate a vehicle in the State of New York for out of state drivers driving in New York. Further, if you receive 6 points on your operator’s license in 18 months, this results in a “Driver’s Responsibility Assessment”, which is a fine imposed by the Department of Motor Vehicles. The fine is $300.00, which can be paid in three yearly installments of $100.00, or in one payment. Driver’s Responsibility Assessments are also issued in every DWI case, in the amount of $750.00, which can be paid in three yearly installments of $250.00, or in one payment.

SCHEDULE FOR THE MOUNT VERNON CITY COURT

The Mount Vernon City Court generally is in operation from Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

DIRECTIONS TO THE MOUNT VERNON CITY COURT

From the New York State Thruway

Exit at Hall Place and make a left turn over the bridge at the end of the exit ramp. Exit onto Central Park Avenue northbound. Proceed on Central Avenue to the end of the Empire City Casino property, which is Yonkers Avenue. Make a right turn onto Yonkers Avenue. Yonkers Avenue will then cross the Bronx River and take you under the railroad tracks. At that juncture, Yonkers Avenue becomes Mount Vernon Avenue. Proceed on Mount Vernon Avenue. At West Lincoln Avenue, Mount Vernon Avenue becomes Stevens Avenue. Travel on Stevens Avenue for four blocks. You will see City Hall on your left, and a parking garage on your right. On the north side of City Hall is the Mount Vernon Police Headquarters and the City Court Building.

From The Deegan Expressway

Heading northbound, exit on Central Avenue after passing the Hall Place Bridge. Follow the directions for the New York State Thruway after getting onto Central Park Avenue.

From Bronx River Parkway North

Exit at Oak Street in Mount Vernon. At the end of the exit, turn right onto Oak Street. Oak Street ends at West Lincoln Avenue. Turn right onto West Lincoln Avenue and proceed to the next traffic light. At the next traffic light, make a left turn onto Stevens Avenue. Go four blocks on Stevens Avenue and you will see City Hall on your left and a parking garage on your right. The Court is on the Second floor of the Mt. Vernon Police Headquarters Building.

From Bronx River Parkway South

After you have gone past Bronxville, the Sprain Brook Parkway meets the Bronx River Parkway. A quarter mile after the parkways meet, you will go under the Cross County Parkway. The first exit after going under the Cross County Parkway will be the Bronx River Road exit. Get off at this exit and make a left at the traffic light onto Bronx River Road. Proceed south for two more traffic lights, and then make a left turn onto Yonkers Avenue crossing over the Bronx River and then proceed under the railroad tracks. Yonkers Avenue becomes Mount Vernon Avenue at this location. At West Lincoln Avenue, it becomes Stevens Avenue. Travel four blocks on Stevens Avenue and you will see City Hall on your left and a parking garage on your right. The Court is located in the Police Headquarters Building on the second floor.
